They’re back! I’ve mentioned these before but new ones have been popping up, so I highly recommend you head back to The Lifted Brow on Mixcloud and check out the new offerings.
Read: The Luminaries
It is 1866, and young Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of twelve local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: A wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky.
I’m yet to finish this epic tome, but that’s hardly surprising considering its length. What I can say is that I’m thoroughly engrossed and invested in this story. I only wish I’d started reading it on the iPad rather than having to carry around the supersized paper version. Not to mention the amount of times it has thunked on my head as I try to read it in bed. Mostly this is just an FYI that for those of you put off by the size or by the Man Booker win, it’s my opinion that the book is well worth the effort.
Watch: Survivor Blood vs Water
Okay, so you’re either into Survivor, or you’re crazy. I spent way too much time last year attempting to watch all the old series, even the ones I’ve seen before (yet to achieve that goal), but I’ve also had the joy of watching Season 27 unfolding. It’s awesome. Survivor at its finest. Watch it. That’s all I can say.
