Listen: Project X soundtrack
Project X is a pretty good movie, especially for a directorial debut. But more impressive than the ultimate college party story is the accompanying soundtrack, which is a great mix of hip-hop, dance, and dubstep.
Watch: The Americans
Set towards the end of the cold war in the early ’80s, The Americans follows two Soviet spies living undercover in America. They’re married, have two kids and live next door to an FBI counter-espionage agent. Despite the somewhat ridiculous plotlines, this is amazing television that consistently keeps you on your toes.
Read: The Revolution Was Televised – Alan Sepinwell
The rise of epic television is something that we tend to take for granted, but it wasn’t always this way. The sheer amount of money that is thrown into productions like Game of Thrones would make 1980s movie executives turn in their graves, and it was down to the pioneering work of series like The Sopranos and The Wire and even older that allowed this to happen. Sepinwell takes an archival look at the directors, producers, and writers who slowly built up the possibility of television art in its long form. Warning – huge amount of spoilers, so make sure you’ve actually watched the various series before you dive into this book. I actually have Ben to thank for this suggestion, but as always, he was right – it’s a damn good read.
