What Makes a World-Class Jeweller? Do You Have What It Takes?

When it comes to achieving our goals, the only thing that stands in our way is ourselves. Very few of us lack the confidence to get out there and try something different because we’re afraid of failure. Well, like or not, failure is a part of the deal – though it’s a fair trade when at the other end you can build a successful career for yourself, the only way is forward!

That being said, we each have things that we’re good at and things that we’re really not! Of course, with plenty of practice and dedication we can master pretty much anything, though it certainly helps to have a few inherently natural abilities.

In this post we are going to explore the qualities that you can expect to find in any jeweller worth their salt. So, if you dream of designing and creating your own jewellery in the hopes of launching your own brand, then have a read and see if you’ve got what it takes!

1 – Patience

The best jewellers have an excellent eye for detail which requires patience above all else. When dealing with such beautiful and intricate pieces, you’ll need to be able to dedicate time to getting every minor aspect of the creation perfect!

2 – Hand-Eye Coordination

In order to become a quality craftsman, you need to have great hand-eye coordination, incredible control and finger dexterity, so that you can manipulate small pieces in your hand and hold them steady whilst using a variety of fine tools. If you’re a bit clumsy that’s not to say that you won’t have what it takes, it’s just going to take a little longer to master it!

3 – Artistic Imagination and Visualisation Skills

A jeweller’s greatest tool is their imagination! Being able to visualise a 3D piece in their minds-eye and then actualising that with artistic precision is something which doesn’t come easy. However, if you’ve always had a creative imagination, whether drawing, painting or writing – you’ll have an excellent advantage when starting out and creating your own jewellery.

4 – Integrity and Dedication

Know that it doesn’t happen overnight! The best jewellers are those who are prepared to work and fail relentlessly until they achieve perfection. It’s an incredibly trying hobby and it will test your patience time and time again, though nothing is quite as satisfying as imagining a piece and then successfully bringing it to life!

5 – Empathy and Honesty

Understand that jewellery is one of the most beautiful and effective means of expression, particularly when gifting them to someone that we care about. A truly spectacular jeweller who creates custom-made items on request will have a great deal of empathy. You need to feel the emotion and channel that into your work as though the person you are making it for was special to you. This level of openness and honesty is the secret to success, as we each have an inherent 6th sense if you like, when it comes to knowing which items of jewellery have been made with love and which have not.

Conclusion

Don’t be disheartened if you didn’t tick every box on this list as the only thing that you really need to succeed is the desire. If you want it more than anything then you’ll be prepared to work hard in order to achieve it. These qualities can be obtained if you try!
